Agreement with the European Union
The goal of this revision of the Gabonese timber certification process is to sign "FLEGT" voluntary partnership agreements with the European Union (EU) in 2013. This is an action plan pertaining to the application of forest law, governance and trade regulations.
The European Union is seeking to develop special partnerships with countries that export tropical timber such as Gabon, which guarantee that timber is legally sourced. Certification is therefore an essential step in the export of timber to the European market.
Certification process in Gabon
The certification of Gabonese timber is managed by PAFC Gabon (Pan African Forest Certification System), an association whose utility is recognised by the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes).
This is an independent process, designed to control forest management, which makes it possible to guarantee measures to combat the illegal trade of timber, ensure effective traceability and supervise forest exploitation methods. The certification covers every stage in production, from felling operations to processing and delivery to the end user.
